Is resident parking available? Yes, for a small fee.

Are there places to get meals? There are cafeterias at both University Hospital of Brooklyn (UHB) and Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC) where hot meals can be obtained. There are also small kiosks just outside the UHB entrance from which food can be purchased. Other food outlets are also available within walking distance of the University.

What is the call schedule like? During the PGY 1 year, while on the inpatient Family Medicine (FM) service evening calls are usually 1 in 3 till 8:30pm. On other inpatient rotations such as Internal Medicine and Pediatric Medicine, the evening call schedule is usually 1 in 4. There is a night float system in Family Medicine and Internal Medicine. On the Labor and Delivery unit, there are 12-hour sessions shifts, a mix of nights during the week. There are up to 2 24-hour calls during Inpatient Pediatrics. During PGY 2 year, Emergency Room sessions are 8 hours, with a combination of day and night sessions. PGY 2 and PGY 3 residents do 24-hour calls in the FM Inpatient Service on alternate weekends. While on the ICU, residents do 4-5 nights, and no 24-hour calls. During the PGY 3 year, there are only 2 months of call on the FM Inpatient Service.

Is there a night float resident? Yes. One month of night float, two 2-week block of night float is expected of each resident in the PGY 2 and PGY 3 years. Work begins at 8:00pm to 7:00am the following day from Sunday to Friday. Family Medicine residents do not participate in the night float while onInternal Medicine.

How well are the interns supervised by senior residents and/or attendings? Each team on the FM service has an assigned senior and an attending, who are always available to discuss patient care for new admissions as well as emergencies that may develop with the inpatients. The senior and the attending on service must be informed of all admission sand emergencies and will steer the resident on call towards the most appropriate action to enhance patient care.

What percentages of residents pass the boards on the first attempt? 97% pass rate over the past 5 years

What percentage of residents find jobs after completion of residency and where? One hundred percent! Over 50 percent stay in the New York area. Other graduates are spread through the US and globally.

Is there any didactic teaching about the business aspect of medicine, e.g. HMO’s setting up a practice etc.? Yes. Practice Management sessions are held once a month at the weekly Thursday afternoon conferences.

Is there an emergency coverage system in place? There are two residents per month on emergency call for coverage of the inpatient service. Depending on the nature of the emergency, a payback system is in effect.

How are the on call facilities? The family medicine call room is well equipped and is located in the hospital on the 6th floor.

How is security within the hospital? Very good. The University police are always present and screen all people who enter the hospital. Entrance to the hospital is not allowed unless identification is provided for inspection. There is an escort system available at nights.

Are any fellowships available at your program? Not at this time.

Does the University provide any form of transportation? There is a shuttle system available for short trips such as the subway/bus stations and also to the clinic at Family Health Services. Commuting costs are supported by optional enrollment in NYS-Ride.
